About Us

Our nation’s education system is leaving millions of students–including an overwhelming number of students of color and low-income students–unprepared for college, career, and life.  While research shows that classroom teachers are the single most important in-school factor in improving student achievement, their diverse voices are consistently left out of education policy decisions. For far too long, teachers have been treated as subjects of change rather than as agents of change.

Founded by public school teachers, Educators for Excellence is a growing movement of 37,000 educators, united around a common set of values and principles for improving student learning and elevating the teaching profession. We work together to identify issues that impact our schools, create solutions to these challenges, and advocate for policies and programs that give all students access to a quality education.

What We Do

Our Theory of Change is grounded in two long-term goals that are inextricably linked: better outcomes for our students and the elevation of the quality and prestige of the teaching profession.  We achieve these goals by changing policy at the district, state, and federal levels and transforming our teachers’ union to be more student-focused, democratic, diverse, and anti-racist.  United around our Declaration of Teachers’ Principles and Beliefs, we are building a powerful movement to lead this change by:

  • Organizing educators who share a common vision of equity and excellence in schools,
  • Training and supporting teacher leadership, and
  • Advocating for teacher-led recommendations at all levels of government, within teachers’ unions, and in the public conversation around education.

Educators for Excellence envisions an equitable and excellent education system that provides all students the opportunity to succeed and elevates the teaching profession.

The Opportunity

E4E organizes anti-racist, student-focused educators, builds their leadership capabilities and collective power through issue-based advocacy campaigns, and supports them to take on positions of leadership in their schools, districts, and most importantly, in their unions. Over our nearly 14-year history, we have made incredible progress organizing teachers to take action to uplift their students and profession.  Through E4E, tens of thousands of educators have signed on to a common vision for elevating the teaching profession and improving student outcomes; thousands of teacher members have successfully advocated for and won equity and excellence focused policy changes in their local communities; and hundreds have trained for and taken on positions of elected and appointed leadership in their schools, districts, and unions.

E4E is currently starting the third year of a three-year strategic plan to build on our learnings from our first fourteen years of impact, especially as the organization adjusted its programming during and after the pandemic. The Vice President of Growth will have a critical leadership role in designing and executing on E4E’s programmatic growth strategy, which will focus on building teacher leadership and policy and advocacy skills both in person and online, to drive anti-racist and student-centered changes in our six chapters, within charter systems and nationally. In particular, we will focus our growth work on contract and policy change in alignment with our Declaration, national policy agenda, and our twin goals of improving the quality and sustainability of the profession and improving outcomes for students, particularly those from historically marginalized communities. We know that our work is more urgent and important than ever during this unprecedented moment in our nation’s education history, and as a result, we are making strategic investments in our leadership team, infrastructure, and program model to continue to accelerate our efficacy and impact.

Reporting directly to the Chief Growth Officer (CGO), the Vice President of Growth will be a critical leader in expanding E4E’s growth and impact. This is a role that requires dynamic ways of working and collaborating across teams with an innovative focus - balancing starting up new programmatic work with building bridges with our chapter work to deepen membership engagement and advance policy change. Working closely with the Senior Director of Impact & Special Projects, a key focus of this role is building and expanding upon the Union Leadership Fellowship that is currently designed for unionized charter schools. This year-long fellowship, with monthly meetings, customized support for systems, and in-person retreats, involves building skills across areas such as negotiations, communications, collaboration, policy knowledge, advocacy, and contract innovation.

Scope: What is the nature of the role?

Union Leadership Fellowship Program

  • In partnership with other growth and program-focused colleagues, lead the oversight and execution of the program, including recruitment, learning design, policy support, facilitation, and follow-up (including organizing strategy) with Union Leadership Fellows - which has initially focused on unionized charter systems.
    • Lead the strategy on the expansion of this program to additional audiences over time.
  • Design adult learning experiences for Union Leaders and School System Leaders to advance innovative contract practices and improved labor/management collaboration; this will involve direct facilitation and working in partnership with external field experts.
  • Conduct research on contracts and policy to advance student-centered policies, including producing memos, slides, and other presentations to build the policy knowledge of Fellows. Advise on policy shifts and potential advocacy efforts.
    • Partner with program and policy leadership for support on policy research and content for the fellowship as capacity permits.
  • Collaborate with partner organizations to support Fellowship impact and advance advocacy efforts that align with E4E’s Declaration and policy agenda in support of participating systems.

Building Bridges with Chapter-Focus

  • Partner with national and chapter-level program leadership to leverage content and tools from growth projects to help build teacher leadership and policy expertise within our chapters and to deepen membership engagement and impact.
    • As capacity allows, adapt resources for building the capacity of our membership base, working closely in partnership with program, policy, and chapter colleagues.
  • Support chapter-level strategy efforts and provide consultative partnership on topics that bridge across growth and chapter strategy as capacity allows.

Co-Design and Execute Additional Growth Innovation Projects

  • Work closely with the Chief Growth Officer and other leaders to build innovative strategies for the expansion of E4E's impact; this includes potential fee-for-service opportunities, new policy-related initiatives/research, new geography expansion, and other potential growth projects.

Strategy, Growth Operations & Fundraising

  • On all of the above, work in close partnership with the Senior Director of Impact & Special Projects, including building, refining, and tracking growth budget expenditures, partnerships and contracts with vendors.
  • Develop materials (including slides, memos, and grant content), present, and build capacity around E4E’s growth strategy across external partners, funders, E4E’s Board, and E4E staff.
  • Represent E4E’s work with a subset of external funders in partnership with frontline fundraisers.
  • Collaborate with the development team to support pitches to expand E4E’s growth and impact.
  • Partner with E4E’s Executive and Leadership teams to support strategic planning efforts.

Cultural leadership: As a member of the Leadership Team, the Vice President of Growth will be a champion of E4E’s Core Values and Commitment to Anti-Racism. This staff member actively embodies anti-racist practices in all aspects of their work, and pushes the organization and their colleagues to continue to grow and improve within these values by modeling a strong and inclusive culture for their team and the streams of work they manage.  The Vice President of Growth will support a team culture where all people can thrive, grow, and develop to further the mission of E4E.
