Our nation’s history of racism and oppression have led to inequities across sectors of society, including education, leaving millions of students— including an overwhelming number of students of color and low-income students—unprepared for college, career, and life. While research shows that classroom teachers are the single most important in-school factor in improving student achievement, their diverse voices are consistently left out of education policy decisions. For far too long, teachers have been treated as subjects of change rather than as agents of change.
Founded by public school teachers, Educators for Excellence is a growing movement of 27,000 educators, united around a common set of values and principles for improving student learning and elevating the teaching profession. We work together to identify issues that impact our schools, create solutions to these challenges, and advocate for policies and programs that give all students access to a quality education.
What We Do
Our Theory of Change is grounded in two long-term goals that are inextricably linked: better outcomes for our students and the elevation of the quality and prestige of the teaching profession. We achieve this by:
- Building a movement of forward-thinking teachers through grassroots organizing in communities across the country
- Identifying and training teacher leaders within that broader movement to take on key positions of influence in their schools, districts, states, and perhaps most importantly, within their teachers unions
- Creating teacher-led policy recommendations in order to bridge the divide between policymakers and the classroom
- Advocating for implementation of teacher-generated policy ideas
- Scaling this model to reach critical mass in the communities we serve and across the country

E4E has realized a number of critical achievements over the past several years, including rapid growth in staff, budget, and impact, and now stands poised to accelerate its progress over the coming five years. As we move forward, we will focus on deepening teacher engagement, developing the vision and tools for transformative teacher leadership, and bringing internal systems to the next level to ensure the organization has the infrastructure, resources, and supports necessary to achieve our goals.
To support this work locally, our New York team is hiring an Outreach Director (OD). The OD will organize, recruit, engage, and mobilize teachers in New York to press for changes in the education system that improve outcomes for students and elevate the teaching profession.
ODs implement E4E’s organizing model by identifying teachers from diverse backgrounds and experiences, recruiting them to become leaders within E4E, and training and supporting those leaders to engage their colleagues in E4E’s core programs. These core programs include: recruiting additional teacher members, leading policy conversations at their schools to shape E4E’s position and local direction, advocating for policy shifts that align to those positions, and participating in their union and other systems of governance that impact teaching and learning. In addition to organizing teacher leaders, ODs engage with educators through one-on-one conversations, policy focus groups and forums, networking events and other events designed to attract new members and build momentum for change..
Grow the E4E Movement:
- Approach your work with a commitment to building excellence in your craft
- Build collaborative relationships and act as the primary liaison with teachers and school leaders
- Cultivate and manage teams of teacher leaders to recruit new members and take action in support of E4E goals
- Grow school based membership by: phone and email outreach; conducting one-on-one meetings with teachers; school visits; trainings; recruiting teachers to attend events; and hosting events to develop a sense of shared community and urgency around E4E’s goals
- Keep members informed of local education policy developments
- Implement new ideas and programs in support of E4E’s mission
- Utilize, update and maintain accurate data to track membership growth and engagement goals
- Recruit, train and develop teacher leader prospects through E4E’s School Team Leader Program
- Coach and lead teams of teachers to meet ambitious engagement goals including E4E membership growth and leadership development
- Connect members with E4E networking, leadership, and advocacy opportunities
- Leverage social media (Facebook, LinkedIn, Twitter, etc.) and other digital tools to engage current and potential members
- Work with teacher leaders to assess and distill the current and potential impacts of district and state education policies on the classroomSupport and organize E4E chapter-based events such as panel discussions and Q & A opportunities with local policymakers
Mobilize for Action:
- Mobilize E4E school teams, supporters and members around teacher-led campaigns and advocacy efforts
- Encourage supporters to become members, members to become volunteers, volunteers to become leaders, and leaders to recruit and develop other members
- Encourage, train and support teacher leaders to take an active role in their school, district, union and other systems of governance to ensure their voices are represented in the decisions that impact their students and careers
- A Bachelor’s degree and at least one year of K-12 teaching experience
- Experience working with diverse populations and communities and building relationships across lines of difference
- Some professional experience in issue advocacy, education policy, and/or community /campaign organizing
- Microsoft Excel and database (e.g. SalesForce) experience
- Excellent interpersonal skills
- Demonstrated track record of influence others to achieve outcomes
- A self-starter with an entrepreneurial spirit; one who can work independently to achieve goals after receiving strategic direction
- A dedication to education reform, and an understanding of the hard, sustained work this role requires to achieve those reformsWillingness to travel around the city and region
- Knowledge of the key players and issues impacting the New York educational landscape
- Proven track record and ability to organize, plan and execute multiple streams of work, meet deadlines and maintain timely correspondence
- Deep commitment to the values of E4E and passion for students, improving education, and closing the opportunity gap
- A willingness to work outside of normal business hours (e.g., some weekends and evenings), as necessary
