Our nation’s education system is leaving millions of students—including an overwhelming number of students of color and low-income students—unprepared for college, career, and life. While research shows that classroom teachers are the single most important in-school factor in improving student achievement, their diverse voices are consistently left out of education policy decisions. For far too long, teachers have been treated as subjects of change rather than as agents of change.
Founded by public school teachers, Educators for Excellence is a growing movement of 27,000 educators, united around a common set of values and principles for improving student learning and elevating the teaching profession. We work together to identify issues that impact our schools, create solutions to these challenges, and advocate for policies and programs that give all students access to a quality education
What We Do
Through our chapters in communities across the country, we provide opportunities for teachers to stay informed, expand their leadership, connect with colleagues and decision-makers, and advocate for change.
Through our work, we provide an opportunity to help shift an inequitable educational system caused by systems of oppression. E4E has expanded to six chapters across the country since 2010 and is looking this year to deepen in impact and excellence.
As a key member of the Senior Leadership Team, the Executive Director (ED) will report directly to the Co-Founders and Co-CEOs and lead our largest and flagship chapter. The ED will have strategic and operational responsibility for E4E-New York staff, programs, growth and execution of its mission to elevate the voices of teachers in state and local education policy. The ED will craft and implement a comprehensive local strategic plan, recruit and manage E4E-NY team members, oversee programming to build and engage a diverse membership base, manage local fundraising and be the face and voice of E4E-New York.

Design and Execute a Local Strategic Plan
- Design and execute a local vision and strategic plan for E4E-New York, with the guidance and support of the national leadership team
- Design and implement systems for evaluating progress toward strategic goals, ensuring that local objectives are met while also aligning efforts with the national organization
Build and Manage a High Performing Team and Quality Programming
- Identify, recruit, support and retain a team of results-oriented, entrepreneurial, creative thinkers to execute outreach, engagement, and policy plans, and assume responsibility for their professional growth and development
- Set and build a mission-driven culture of high expectations, determination, and fun
- Provide oversight to the Managing Director of External Affairs on the vision setting and execution of the chapter’s local policy priorities, including leading E4E- New York Teacher Policy Teams to create policy recommendations and advocacy/communication campaigns to encourage the implementation of these recommendations at the local and state level
- Provide oversight to the Managing Director of Outreach on the implementation of E4E’s grassroots organizing model, teacher leadership programs and event series
- Ensure that the local chapter recruits, engages and fosters the leadership of a diverse and growing number of educators
Manage External Relations
- Communicate E4E-New York’s goals and priorities through speeches, op-eds, education events and conferences, media outreach, and communications with teachers and the general public
- Secure opportunities for teachers to share their voice directly in local media, with support and guidance from the National Director of Communications
- Build and maintain relationships with local policymakers, union leaders, key stakeholders, interest groups, and elected officials
- Establish E4E-New York as a go to source for the opinions and perspectives of progressive educators on issues that impact New York City’s classrooms
Ensure Financial Security
- Develop and expand local fundraising activities, with a strong focus on cultivating new – and leveraging existing – relationships with local foundations and individual donors
- Administer E4E-New York’s budget, ensuring fiscal responsibility and stability
- Build and manage a local Board of Advisors to support the growth and stability of the New York Chapter
- At least five years of professional experience in education, education policy, community/campaign organizing, and/or advocacy
- At least one year of experience serving as a Pre K-12 classroom teacher
- Experience in strategically planning for and evaluating the growth of an outcomes-based organization
- Proven leadership and organizational management experience, including having coached staff, managed and developed high-performance teams, set and achieved strategic objectives, and managed a budget
- Experience in preparing and delivering public presentations and superb interpersonal skills with specific examples from a variety of settings
- Strong marketing, public relations, and fundraising experience, with the ability to engage a wide range of stakeholders, including a board of advisors
- Track record of overcoming obstacles in challenging environments
- Willingness to travel occasionally
